Top US judge in dig at Harry’s UN speech

A US Supreme Court Justice who voted to overturn the right to abortion in America has mocked the Duke of Sussex for criticisin­g his decision.

Addressing a religious liberty conference in Rome, Justice Samuel Alito joked that he had been ‘wounded’ by a speech Prince Harry delivered to the United Nations on July 18.

The prince had said: ‘From the horrific war in Ukraine to the rolling back of constituti­onal rights here in the United States, we are witnessing a global assault on democracy and freedom.’

Justice Alito joked: ‘What really wounded me was when the Duke of Sussex addressed the United Nations and seemed to compare the decision, whose name may not be spoken, with the Russian attack on Ukraine.’ The comments prompted groans from the audience.

He also ridiculed Boris Johnson for his criticism, joking that he had ‘paid the price’ by being forced to resign. At the time, the PM had called the move a ‘big step backwards’. Justice Alito, a devout Catholic, was among the conservati­ve majority which voted 5-2 to strike down the law – in place since 1973.
