MOW THE MEADOW
IF YOU have unmown rough grass or a wildflower meadow, it’s time to ‘make hay’. Grass blended with scabious, knapweeds and other late wildflowers can be left until later in August. Spring meadows with cowslips, sorrel and snakeshead fritillaries can be cut back now. After the first cut, leave the ‘hay’ lying for a few days. Seed will then shed, boosting wildflower numbers in your meadow. Then rake it up for disposal.
