Waitrose Essential Long Grain Rice, £1.40 (1kg) EXCELLENT quality, easy cook rice with welldistinguished grains. 4/5 Sainsbury’s, £1.35 (1kg) MARKETED as ‘easy cook’, the grains took ages to soften. 3/5 Tesco, £1.35 (1kg) GRAINS taste gritty, even after cooking for 15 minutes. 3/5 Morrisons, £1.39 (1kg) FLUFFY, cooks easily. 4/5 Asda Just Essentials, 45p (1kg)

DON’T even try to wash out all the starch. Just keep for sticky rice dishes. 2/5 Co-op Simply Value, £1.20 (1kg) FLUFFS up well and the rice has a pleasant slightly nutty taste. 4/5 Aldi Everyday Essentials, 45p (1kg) GREAT all-rounder — as long as you wash the grains thoroughly before and after cooking. 5/5 Lidl Long Grain Rice, 65p (1kg) SLIGHTLY starchy. 4/5
