Farewell Uhura, 89, legend of Star Trek

-

STAR Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, who made history on US television with an inter-racial kiss in the 1960s, has died aged 89.

Miss Nichols found fame as communications officer Lt Nyota Uhura in the hit series from 1966 to 1969. The role earned her accolades for smashing stereotypes that had limited black women to parts as servants, and included the ground-breaking kiss with costar William Shatner, who played Captain James Kirk. Her son, Kyle Johnson, said she died on Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico.

Mr Johnson said: ‘Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from.’
