Look to the U.S.
HAVING worked as a surgeon in the NHS and the U.S. health system, I agree with Professor Stephen Smith that patients should pay something toward their treatment ( Mail). The fundamental problem appears to be that people have no idea how much their care costs.
In the U.S., all patients receive a bill, however it is paid. I feel sure if everyone knew the cost of treatment in advance, there would be a reduction in pressure on the NHS. Professor ROBERT T. HOLL-ALLEN,
