No to special treatment

-

I AM amazed by the calls for special treatment for women experiencing the menopause.

Come on, girls, we are better than this. I managed to get through menstruation, childbirth and the menopause, which are all normal biological processes.

Women’s groups fought hard for equality and rightly claimed we are as capable as men. It has been a struggle, but progress has been made against sex discrimination.

But calls for dispensations for menopausal women will wipe away all those years of effort on our behalf. They will only serve to confirm some people’s view that women are weaker than men.

What next? Men asking for ‘losing hair’ leave? Like the menopause, it’s a process that the body throws at us and which makes us human.

With strength and determination, we can overcome the menopause. It is not a disease.

To those seeking to make others think it is, I can only advise that it will pass. And you will benefit from all that strength to cope with what comes next.
