Trimble tribute

RUTH DUDLEY EDWARDS’ tribute to the late David Trimble (Mail), former First Minister of Northern Ireland and Ulster Unionist party leader, reminded us of a cruise we took on the Douro river in Spain and Portugal ten years ago. It was a French boat and

the ten English speakers on board were allocated the same table for meals.

An Irish couple introduced themselves as Daphne and David and joined in all our activities. We often won the daily, French-biased quiz and shared the prize, a large bottle of Mateus Rose.

Halfway through our holiday, we asked Daphne if they were going straight home to Ireland. She said no as her husband had some business to attend to in London.

When asked what was his job she reluctantly stated he didn’t like to volunteer the fact he was in the House of Lords.

They were David and Daphne Trimble. Such a lovely friendly and easygoing couple.
