Cost of rashers looks set to rocket

-

PRICES of sausages and bacon at supermarkets could soar as the cost of British pigs rises.

A source at one of the major supermarkets said higher prices from pork suppliers meant shoppers would see costs rise on the shelves – and while grocers would try to absorb some of the increases, they would affect customers.

‘When suppliers put up prices, those increases inevitably will end up on the shelves,’ the source said. The comments came after FTSE 250 butcher Cranswick flagged that pig prices in the UK had risen by 27pc in the three months to June 25.

The rapid increase was attributed to record high prices for animal feed following shortages of wheat and soya caused by the war in Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest grain producers. But despite this, the company still reported 7.6pc revenue growth in the three-month period.
