THE SILENT MIND, 11AM, RADIO 4

-

CHILDREN talk to themselves when they play and when they are trying to solve problems. For most of us, as we grow older, this talking turns into an interior monologue that helps us to make plans, gee ourselves up and get through testing situations. In some cases these voices can be loud, varied and intrusive; for a few people the inner voice can be almost silent. The psychologist Professor Charles Fernyhough — author of The Voices Within — shares his thoughts on our differing experiences of the voices in our heads, and the mysteries of how we think.

WHEN people asked Anneka Rice’s ageing father how he was, he would reply, ‘above the ground and breathing.’ He took a calm and realistic approach to death. When he died, his family had to decide what to do with his ashes. In today’s episode of ANNEKA HAS ISSUES (6.30PM, RADIO 4), in which she deals with tricky subjects in a stand-up format, Anneka (pictured) explains how they found the perfect spot — a place on Dartmoor called Laughter Tor.
