Kenny’s future uncertain

- DAVID COVERDALE

DAME LAURA KENNY has thrown her future into doubt after admitting she needs time to decide if she can keep giving her all to cycling. Following her victory in the Commonwealth Games scratch race on Monday, the 30-year-old said she may skip next week’s European Championships to have a break before the World Championships in October. However, her participation at the 2024 Olympics is unclear. ‘I’m not going to make any decision based on a couple of feelings I’ve had over the last 48 hours,’ she said. ‘But I would like a little bit of time away and then I can decide.’

Kenny opened up having won gold, after a ‘confidence crisis’ when she finished 13th in the points race. Britain’s greatest female Olympian thought Monday might be her last time on a bike. And although her win appeared to invigorate her, she still feels conflicted.

Kenny has a four-year-old son Albie with husband Jason and planned to have a second child after last summer’s Olympics but suffered a miscarriage and then an ectopic pregnancy. ‘Being on a bike is not as happy as my family life,’ she told BBC Breakfast. ‘Now I have a family, there are lots of times I think, “I wish I was doing that, I wish I was going to Legoland with Albie”. ‘Had my personal life gone the way Jason and I thought, I wouldn’t even have been at the Commonwealth Games.’
