Henderson: My treatment at United was criminal

- By CHRIS WHEELER

DEAN HENDERSON has accused Manchester United of reneging on a promise to make him their No 1 goalkeeper, saying it is ‘criminal’ he spent last season on the bench. Henderson has joined Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan but the 25-year-old is furious over his treatment by United, having returned from a loan spell at Sheffield United two years ago. Henderson shared goalkeeping duties with David De Gea in the 2020-21 campaign but got long Covid before last season and played just three times.

‘It has probably been the toughest 12 months of my career,’ he told talkSPORT.

‘I am so happy I have gone out the other end.

‘The conversation I had coming out of the Euros was “you’re coming back to be the No 1”. ‘I got Covid-19 and came back, so I should have been the No 1 but nobody followed through with what they had told me. ‘It was frustrating because I turned down so many good loans. To sit there for 12 months is criminal really. I was fuming.’ Henderson did not even train under Erik ten Hag in case the new manager tried to keep him. ‘I don’t want to be here and play second fiddle,’ he added.
