Foden seals six-year City deal on £225k a week

- By MIKE KEEGAN

PHIL FODEN has agreed a new long-term contract at Manchester City worth around £225,000 a week.

Sportsmail understands there has been a long-awaited breakthrough on a deal which will make the 22-year- old one of the highest-paid youngsters on the planet and see him increase his salary by more than seven times.

An offer had been on the table for a number of months but bosses at the Etihad are delighted with this significant boost ahead of the new season. An announcement on what is likely to be a six-year deal is expected in the coming days.

A homegrown star, Stockport-born Foden excelled last season for both club and country and is the poster boy for City’s academy. In May he won his fourth Premier League title in five years with City, and has 16 England caps.

The new deal dwarfs the £30,000-a-week contract he signed in 2018 and will be more reflective of a player expected to enjoy a substantial amount of first-team football for Pep Guardiola.

It is also a boost for England manager Gareth Southgate, with Foden now able to focus on his football ahead of the winter World Cup in Qatar. MAKING OF CITY STAR
