M&S joins ban on selling disposable BBQs
MARKS & Spencer has become the latest retailer to stop selling disposable barbecues blamed for triggering a spate of wildfires.
M&S said: ‘We want to help protect open spaces and reduce the risk of fires. We’d already stopped selling disposable barbecues near national parks and in London but given the conditions, we’ve taken the precautionary step of removing them from sale across the UK.’
Asda and Morrisons are said to be considering a similar ban. Morrisons and Co-Op have already stopped selling the barbecues – which can reach 400C and are said to have left adults and children with horrific burns.
Brighton and Hove City Council has banned the grills from its beaches, parks and open spaces. With grassland ‘like a tinderbox’, some authorities are also considering a ban on the sale of fireworks and sky lanterns.
