RELIEF FOR RICHARDS

WORLD champion Evie Richards put a horror year behind her to win gold for England in the women’s mountain bike race. The 25-year-old has had back problems and also caught Covid last month but finished 47seconds clear yesterday.

KNIGHT RULED OUT

CRICKET captain Heather Knight has been ruled out of England’s gold medal bid. The all-rounder missed the first two group games after injuring her hip in the recent series with South Africa and will play no part in the Games. England, who are already into the semi-finals, take on New Zealand today.

PUPIL MASTERS JUDO

JAMAL PETGRAVE graduated with a judo gold for England — in front of his old lecturer. The 25-year-old won the men’s 90kg final in Coventry and said: ‘I went to Coventry Uni and one of my lecturers was in the crowd. I was raring to go.’

JOY FOR GEORGINA

GEORGINA KENNEDY emulated club-mate Emma Raducanu’s meteoric rise by becoming the first Englishwom­an to win squash singles gold. Kennedy, 25, trains at the same club in Bromley where US Open tennis champion Raducanu started out. ‘I’ve dreamed of this,’ said world No 8 Kennedy.
