Can quinoa slash risk of diabetes?
QUINOA could help slash the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a study found.
People over 65 who replaced carb-rich foods such as pasta, cereal and potatoes with quinoa for four weeks saw a reduced spike in their blood sugar after eating.
The nine people in the Open University of Catalonia study, published in the journal Nutrients, all had pre-diabetes – blood sugar high enough to put them on the brink of type 2 diabetes.
But Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic med icine at the University of Glasgow, called for caution: ‘This is an interesting pilot study but is not a randomised trial, so we can’t know quinoa reduces people’s blood sugar after meals.’
