Do we value childcare?
CRITICISM of the crippling cost of childcare (Mail) does not take into account pay and conditions.
We have extensive knowledge of early years development, first aid and safeguarding. As well as providing activities and equipment to support learning, we ensure every child feels special, safe and secure
and has lots of fun. Many of us are paid the minimum wage. When I pointed out that a relative who works in education administration is paid significantly more than me, I was told it’s because she handles cash — a sad reflection that we value money over the most vulnerable members of society.
Research tells us the first five years of a child’s life are the most important developmentally, and yet not only are childcarers under-funded and under-paid, but the Government is ingratiating itself with working families by proposing a jump in child-to-adult ratios.
