Was Giggs’s ex planning to have his baby so he’d keep paying for her?

She made up a cancer scare to cover for removal of contraceptive, court is told

- By James Tozer

THE ex-girlfriend of Ryan Giggs yesterday denied secretly planning to get pregnant so he would have to continue supporting her luxury lifestyle as their ‘toxic’ relationship disintegrated.

But Kate Greville did admit in court to falsely telling him she had a medical appointment over a cancer scare – when in reality it was a cover story for her plans to have her contraceptive coil removed.

Cross- examined on the fourth day of the former Manchester United star’s trial for assault and controlling and coercive behaviour, the PR executive admitted telling friends she began ‘planning my attack’ after learning Giggs had been cheating on her with eight g other women.

However, she denied that another message in which she told friends ‘I am not walking away with nothing’ was a reference to tricking him into getting her pregnant before she left him for good.

Miss Greville, 38, also rejected an accusation by Giggs’s barrister that the pair enjoyed ‘active, regular and very enthusiastic sex’ after she had the coil removed.

She admitted speaking to a friend about being paid £5,000 for allowing a tabloid photographer to take pictures of her injured lip days after allegedly being headbutted by Giggs. But

Miss Greville said she never received any cash for the resulting article – and denied using make-up to ‘enhance’ the injury.

Chris Daw QC, representing Giggs at Manchester Crown Court, asked her about the message she sent a friend in October 2020 – just weeks before the alleged headbutt – that she was ‘not walking away with nothing’.

‘Your plan was to get pregnant by Mr Giggs?’ he asked her.

Miss Greville replied ‘Absolutely not’, saying she had meant she didn’t want to walk away without their golden retriever puppy Mac.

Mr Daw read out a message in which she asked Giggs about buying a £1,000 pair of Prada boots in Harrods.

He asked whether she had ‘got very used to the lifestyle you enjoyed with Mr Giggs?’

Miss Greville responded that she could ‘ still provide for myself’ as a single woman even though she would not be entitled to any financial support because they weren’t married.

She was then asked about a message she sent Giggs that month telling him she had had a smear test and ‘I had cancerous cells’. Giggs responded: ‘Oh my God. How did you not tell me?’ the court heard.

Miss Greville replied that it was ‘ something I want to deal with on my own’, the court was told. Mr Daw said: ‘The truth is you were going to have your contraceptive out.’

Miss Greville replied: ‘I was getting my coil out and I also wanted an STD test.’

She said she ‘ completely’ regretted the cancer scare ‘lie’, but added: ‘I needed to say something to get him off my back and for him to leave me alone.’ Under questioning, she admitted there had been ‘no medical emergency’ which necessitated the removal of the coil, but said it ‘was coming to an end and it needed taking out’.

‘If I was saying I had cancerous cells then I would not have to have sex with him,’ she added.

Mr Daw said: ‘I am going to suggest you were having active, regular and very enthusiastic sex with Mr Giggs at this time, including when you had this coil removed.’ Miss Greville said: ‘I disagree.’

Mr Daw read out a text exchange in which Miss Greville asked Giggs if an eight-mile jog he was planning was in order to ‘burn off that cheesecake’.

Giggs replied that he had done two workouts, one at 8am that day and one the night before.

Mr Daw suggested this was a reference to their having had sex ‘twice in 24 hours’. But she

‘Regular and very enthusiastic sex’

retorted that it ‘ absolutely wasn’t’ the case.

Mr Daw asked her: ‘If you had got pregnant with Mr Giggs, you would have anticipated a significant amount of support for a long period of time?

‘ You would have been tied together pretty much for ever.’

She replied: ‘I know, and I would never have done that because that’s not what I wanted.’ On

‘More to cover my legal costs’

Wednesday, Miss Greville revealed she had given birth to a baby with her unnamed new partner 12 weeks ago.

Yesterday she was asked about a photograph of her walking Mac which appeared in The Sun on November 16, 2020 – four days before she was interviewed by police about her allegations.

The jury was told it was headlined: ‘ Living hell. Ryan Giggs’s ex spotted with a bruised lip in first outing since Wales manager’s assault arrest’.

In a November 10 message exchange with her flatmate, referred to only as Courtney, the jury was told Miss Greville wrote: ‘We can set up a pic and get money for both of us. What do you think?’ Courtney replied: ‘I think yes.’

Miss Greville wrote back: ‘ We could get 5K.’ The friend replied: ‘And kit our new apartment out.’ Miss Greville replied that she was thinking ‘more to cover my legal costs’ followed by a laughing emoji.

Questioned about whether she agreed ‘ this is you setting up a newspaper article for money about this case’, Miss Greville replied: ‘It was a picture.’

The court heard she later sent a link of the article to Courtney, adding it made her look ‘ awful but me looking rough makes it look less staged’.

‘But it was staged, wasn’t it?’ Mr Daw asked. ‘Yes, I did set it up,’ she replied. He put it to her that she was ‘ trying to get the public to turn on Mr Giggs’.

However, Miss Greville said her intention had been to gain ‘control of that first photograph’ so that paparazzi would stop ‘ harassing me’. Asked by Mr Daw if she ‘enhanced’ the lip injury with make-up ‘to make it much worse than it was’, she replied: ‘No.’

But she admitted having filler in her lips shortly before the alleged attack, saying it made them more ‘tender’.

Later, under re-examination by prosecutor Peter Wright QC, Miss Greville said she was not paid for the image in the end and had never asked for any money.

Also yesterday, Miss Greville claimed Giggs made her feel like she was ‘losing my mind’ after she moved in with him during the first Covid lockdown in March 2020.

She added that she now felt ‘ashamed’ that she agreed to live with him at his £1.7million mansion despite a ‘cycle of abuse’ going back five years.

Miss Greville told the jury Giggs threw a bag at her head and then kicked her out of bed at London’s Stafford Hotel on the evening of December 6, 2019, before ejecting her naked from the room. It echoed an alleged 2017 incident at a hotel in Dubai.

The next morning, Mr Daw said she told Giggs in text messages: ‘I was so drunk I don’t remember much about that night.’

Miss Greville told the court she asked him: ‘Did you throw a bag at me last night?’ She said he

‘He made me feel like it was my fault’

replied: ‘Yes, but you wound me up that much you made me do it.’ Mr Daw said: ‘That’s all just lies, isn’t it?’ Miss Greville replied: ‘No, absolutely not.’

The following morning Giggs offered to pick her up. Mr Daw said: ‘ He didn’t have to personally come to collect you. He could have arranged a taxi for you.’

Miss Greville said: ‘ He could have, but he felt guilty for what he had done the night before.’

Mr Daw said: ‘ Apart from the fact that you have a hangover, there is nothing else in these messages to suggest he has violently assaulted you the night before.’

The witness replied: ‘No, that’s because he made me feel like it was my fault.’

Giving evidence on Tuesday, Miss Greville told the jury that Giggs headbutted her on November 1, 2020 after she confronted him about his serial cheating.

The discovery of messages ‘going back years’ on Giggs’s iPad prompted her to decide to leave him once and for all, she said.

Giggs, 48, denies using controlling and coercive behaviour against Miss Greville between August 2017 and November 2020.

He has also pleaded not guilty to assaulting her, causing her actual bodily harm, and of the common assault of her sister Emma who was alleged also hurt in the tussle over a phone.

The trial continues.
