Don’t look now... it’s Depp making a royal comeback
AFTER a high-profile legal battle with his ex-wife, Johnny Depp is back at court – but this time it’s a royal one.
He plays French king Louis XV in his first major role for two years. The first production shots show him in a blindfold – and until two months ago the 59-year-old actor had difficulty seeing what the future would hold.
Then, Depp thanked a Virginia jury who ‘gave me my life back’ following his bitter defamation case against Amber Heard. They found Miss Heard had lied about being a victim of domestic violence during her marriage to the Pirates Of The Caribbean star.
Depp plays Louis XV in the 18th century French drama Jeanne du Barry, about a young woman who climbed the social hierarchy to become the king’s mistress for the last five years of his life. Filming began on July 26 and is set to last 11 weeks in locations including Versailles.
The French language film, set for release next year, is Depp’s first major role since he played a war photographer in Minamata in 2020.
He learned French so he could speak it with his two children, Lily-Rose, 23, and Jack, 20, by ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, 49.
The family divided their time between France and the US until Depp and the French singer separated in 2012 after 14 years.
