Grant fires Bruce into round two

- By WILL BECKMAN

KARLAN GRANT’S second-half header earned West Bromwich Albion their first win of the season and set up a Carabao Cup second-round tie at League One Derby. Steve Bruce’s side dominated at the Hawthorns but were denied repeatedly by Sheffield United keeper Wes Foderingham until 17 minutes from time. Grant scuffed his first attempt from Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s cross but made no mistake when Callum Robinson sent the ball back across goal. Rhian Brewster struck a post for the visitors early on and Reda Khadra went close twice, but West Brom were well worth their victory on a night that saw Foderingham take centre stage. The 31-year-old’s most eyecatching save came from Adam Reach’s close-header minutes before Grant struck. West Brom should have added a second when they hit the bar twice in three seconds via Robinson and Matt Phillips. But Bruce’s side held on, leaving them as one of just eight Championship sides left in the competition.
