Any fries with your latest gaffe, Rishi?

RISHI Sunak came under fire again yesterday after it emerged his ‘go-to’ McDonald’s order was taken off the menu more than two years’ ago.

The Tory leadership hopeful was accused of failing to be ‘straight’ about his fast food order despite basing his campaign on telling people difficult truths.

In an interview on ITV’s This Morning, the ex-chancellor said he likes to order a breakfast wrap from McDonald’s if he is dining out with his daughters.

But fans of the restaurant chain were quick to point out it stopped serving the item at the start of the pandemic. In January, the company said that breakfast wraps – along with bagels – would not be returning to the menu.

A Whitehall source told the Daily Mail: ‘ For a man who claims his campaign is based on telling people difficult truths, it’s a shame he can’t even be straight about his McDonald’s order.’

But Mr Sunak’s campaign defended the gaffe, saying: ‘ Rishi has barely seen his kids in the last two and half years since he became chancellor so there has been almost no opportunity to share a McDonald’s with them. He’s hoping they might consider bringing the breakfast wrap back on the menu.’

The latest blunder comes just months after he was mocked for struggling to use his contactless card at a petrol station. Earlier this week he poked fun at the mistake, posting a photograph of himself paying at a McDonald’s self- service machine with the caption: ‘Nailed it.’

Asked by presenters what he had ordered, the father of two replied: ‘I get a bacon roll with ketchup and the pancakes. But if I’m with my daughters then we get the wrap. If I’m with [my eldest daughter] we get the wrap with the hash brown.’

Mr Sunak has been trailing behind leadership rival Liz Truss in the polls, yet insisted yesterday that he still has a ‘shot’ at being the next prime minister.
