Antony must stay, insists Ajax boss

- SIMON JONES

MANCHESTER UNITED are weighing up a new offer for Ajax winger Antony, despite the Dutch club’s manager insisting he must stay. The Brazilian has made it clear he wishes to leave and missed Ajax’s 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday having trained alone last week after United’s £67.8million bid. Ajax rejected that offer and boss Alfred Schreuder has demanded the club resist any more offers.

‘I am assuming that the club will not sell Antony as we’re in a good financial position,’ said Schreuder. ‘I told the board that I want him to stay here. I understand Antony, but here you play for Ajax. We are playing Champions League football. I don’t think Manchester United are.’ United are prepared to step up negotiations with PSV for Cody Gakpo, 23. A deal for Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic no longer seems viable, with the winger set to fight for his place.
