Biden: Trump and MAGA extremists threaten the very foundations of U.S.
JOE Biden has launched a fiery attack on Donald Trump and his ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) Republican supporters – warning of an ‘extremism’ that threatens the US’s ‘very foundations’.
In a rare prime-time televised address in Philadelphia, he tried to reframe November’s congressional midterm elections not as a referendum on his unpopular presidency but as a ‘battle for the soul of this nation’.
With millions of Americans still convinced by the former president’s insistence that the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from him, Mr Biden, 79, raised the stakes in his customary message of unity.
‘As I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault,’ he said, calling on voters from all parties to ‘unite behind the single purpose of defending our democracy regardless of your ideology’.
Some 20 months into a presidency he pledged would get the US back to normal, he said: ‘Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.’ Recalling MAGA supporters’ storming of the US Capitol in January 2021 in a bid to stop the handover of power, he said they don’t respect the US Constitution.
In response, Mr Trump asked if the President was ‘insane... or suffering from late stage dementia!’
He wrote on social media: ‘Someone should explain to Joe Biden, slowly but passionately, that MAGA means, as powerfully as mere words can get, Make America Great Again! If he doesn’t want to... which through words, action and thought he doesn’t, then he certainly should not be representing the United States.’
