‘Darwin won’t see red again’

- DOMINIC KING

JURGEN KLOPP has backed Darwin Nunez to cope with the test of his temperament that will come with facing Everton. Nunez, Liverpool’s record summer signing, is available after serving a three-game ban for headbutting Joachim Anderson, having been wound up by the Palace defender’s constant goading. It was a moment that all Premier League centre backs will have noted. Klopp is confident Nunez will not make the same mistake in a clash sure to be bursting with emotion, but stopped short of promising there will never be a repeat.

‘He is a wonderful young man, but he has emotions as well,’ said Klopp (left), who’s unlikely to have new signing Arthur Melo available as international clearance has not yet arrived for the Brazil midfielder. ‘He made a mistake. We didn’t speak for the full 15 days about it, telling him, “You have to calm down!” Of course we told him, not only now but now especially. ‘I think Luis Suarez told him. That will happen but it happens to others as well. You just have to ignore it and use it.

‘How we want to think in these situations is that we pay back with football, and that is how it is. I don’t think James Tarkowski and Conor Coady are famous for this kind of talking during the game. Most of the things he doesn’t understand anyway!

‘If Darwin plays then he has to be ready for these things. The two weeks out helped for sure. Will it never happen again? I don’t know but I’m pretty sure nothing will happen in the next game.’ Tarkowski, the Everton defender, also addressed Nunez, saying: ‘Everyone has moments in their career but you learn and I’m sure he will. I’m not going to go and be his best mate. But I expect him to be switched right on.’
