California here I come? Rishi won’t rule out returning to US

-

RISHI Sunak has not ruled out leaving Britain and returning to California if he loses the Tory leadership contest.

The former chancellor yesterday insisted he will remain an MP for the time being, but would not commit to staying longer term.

Mr Sunak has faced speculation he could quit politics and go back to a career in banking in America. Appearing on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, he said: ‘I’m going to stay as a Member of Parliament.’

But pressed on whether he would commit to standing at the next general election, rather than return to California, Mr Sunak declined to say. ‘It’s presumptuous for me to say because I have to get selected by my own members,’ he said.

He also did not rule out standing for the Conservative leadership again in future if he is unsuccessful in the current contest.

He said: ‘We’ve just finished this campaign. I’d say... I need to recover from this one.’
