Grandfather, 81, injured in police ‘beating’ after address mix-up
A GRANDFATHER needed hospital treatment after being tackled to the ground by police following an address mix-up.
Malcolm Emery, 81, was left with horrific injuries to his arms and wrists after the ‘altercation’ with two female officers.
Armed with a ‘dog walking stick’, the former milkman went outside to confront what he thought was an intruder peering into the window of his home in Potton, Bedfordshire. Mr Emery said: ‘When I saw two police officers I put it [the stick] down by my side. I turned and walked back and the next thing I was on the ground. I was down and they gave me a right beating.’ Bedfordshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. It accepts Mr Emery’s house was a ‘mistaken address’ after reports of a 5am disturbance on Friday. One officer tried to take the stick and sustained a cut to her face. Mr Emery was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.
Detective Chief Superintendent Julie Henderson said police were ‘carrying out our own internal review’.
