Free climber scales 1,016ft Shard

- By Izzy Lyons

A FREE climber banned from scaling tall buildings was arrested yesterday after reaching the top of the Shard.

Adam Lockwood shared a photo of himself after completing the 1,016ft ascent of the UK’s tallest building.

By then police had been called to the London landmark and the 21-year-old from Wigan was arrested for trespass after coming down at around 6am.

They had to cordon off the area around the tower and closed some exits at nearby London Bridge station. Two other men were detained.

George King, who was sentenced to six months in a young offenders’ institute for climbing the Shard in 2019, said: ‘Incredible. Those moments you have experienced are yours for all time. No judge. No policeman. No lawyer can take that away from you. Cherish them forever. Lots of love. Well done.’

In 2019, Lockwood was banned from climbing buildings, cranes, buses, trams or trains in England and Wales. But a year later he was given a suspended jail term for breaking the injunction, with the judge saying he was motivated by ‘arrogance’ and ‘greed for celebrity’.

His ascents include the 262ft San Siro stadium in Milan, a 1,115ft power station in Croatia and a 1,200ft crane in Dubai. He shuns safety equipment, using only his grip and strength.
