BARACK Obama has beaten Sir David Attenborough to win an Emmy award for a nature documentary series.

The former US president was named best narrator for Our Great National Parks on Netflix, which was made by his production company Higher Ground.

Sir David, 96, who has narrated countless nature series over the years, was nominated at the Creative Arts Emmys for The Mating Game on the BBC.

Following his success at the Los Angeles ceremony this weekend, Mr Obama is now just one award away from becoming a so-called Egot – someone with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

He has two Grammys for audio recordings of his memoirs The Audacity Of Hope and Dreams From My Father. And Higher Ground won the best documentary Oscar for American Factory on Netflix.

Our Great National Parks looks at some of the most ‘spectacular’ examples around the world, including Gunung Leuser in Indonesia. Mr Obama, 61, is the second former US president to have won an Emmy, after Dwight Eisenhower, who was given a special award in 1956.
