Frankie banned for 14 days

- MARCUS TOWNEND

FRANKIE DETTORI was hit with a 14-day ban for his use of the whip but picked up the plum ride in next month’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Torquator Tasso after a topsy-turvy day at Baden Baden yesterday. Dettori used his whip one time more the five permitted to incur a suspension that will rule him out of the Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting, featuring the Middle Park and Cheveley Park Stakes, as well as day one of the Arc meeting at Longchamp.

But the Italian will be back for Arc day on October 2 when he will be reunited with last year’s winner Torquator Tasso. The colt narrowly lost out yesterday to Mendocino in the Grosser Preis von Baden. Mendocino was ridden by Torquator Tasso’s regular jockey Rene Piechulek, who is contracted to the colt’s owners, and his win earned him a shot at the Arc — so Dettori will stand in on Torquator Tasso again.

Dettori said: ‘Once we go to France and get soft ground and a strong-run race, we’ll be in business. Today we went too slow. He wasn’t beaten far.’ Meanwhile, Charlie Appleby-trained Coroebus, winner of the 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, suffered a fatal leg fracture in the closing stages of the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

The colt crashed to the ground in a horror fall, with jockey William Buick lucky to escaped unscathed.

The Moulin was won by Ed Walker-trained Dreamloper, ridden by Kieran Shoemark.
