TONIGHT’S concert opens with a suite from Thomas Ades’s opera about the scandalous Duchess of Argyll, Powder Her Face, before the violinist Nicola Benedetti (pictured) performs a Concerto written for her by the jazz trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Nicola has played this work all over the world, describing the experience as ‘lifechanging’; it ends with a bit of a barn dance and fast fiddling that should go down a storm in the Royal Albert Hall. After the interval, a mambo, a cha-cha and a dream ballet are on the bill as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra plays the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

THERE are a lot of people out there who owe their lives to Henry Marsh. Henry is a neuroscientist of great skill, who’s written about working on the borders, between life and death. He has a new book out, called And, Finally: Matters Of Life And Death. Henry is a kindly man of great charm, who’s been diagnosed with advanced cancer. He tells MARK FORREST (SCALA RADIO, 10AM) about the book, which deals with the impact this diagnosis has had on his life.
