RODGERS £10M SAFETY NET
Foxes boss protected by hefty pay-out clause
BRENDAN RODGERS is due a compensation package of at least £10million if he is sacked by Leicester following the club’s worst start to a season since 1983.
The Foxes boss is under increasing scrutiny after his team collected only one point from their first six games. Sunday’s 5-2 thrashing at Brighton was their fifth defeat in a row — a sequence that cost Claudio Ranieri his job in February 2017, nine months after leading Leicester to their first League title.
Rodgers signed a deal in December 2019 that made him the highest-paid manager in the club’s history and it runs until June 2025.
He has expressed his frustration at the club’s lack of transfer activity this summer. Their only outfield signing was Belgium defender Wout Faes for £15m, after the exit of Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for five times that figure. Writing in the programme before last week’s home defeat by Manchester United, Foxes chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha highlighted the need for sustainability to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play rules.
Leicester’s next two fixtures are at home to Aston Villa and at Tottenham. Rodgers’ comments on the transfer window are thought to have caused frustration at the club.
Asked at Brighton if he still believed he had the club’s backing, Rodgers said: ‘I’ve never asked for it in all my time here — I’ve never wanted it. I’ll continue to do my work and come in and study and do as much as I can.’
