BARBRA STREISAND and Elliott Gould have done wonders for the Dominican Republic’s foreign currency reserves. Their divorce there in July has made the Caribbean Island the leading ‘quickie splitsvill­e’ of the Western hemisphere. Since then, 250 American couples have flown in for 72- hour, £ 200 divorces, and it has overtaken Haiti, which claims to be able to deliver a final decree in only 24 hours.

TERRy WoGAN overslept and was nearly an hour late for his radio breakfast show yesterday. It meant Ken Bruce got more than he bargained for on his Radio Two debut. He had to overrun by an hour until a breathless Wogan arrived. Said Wogan: ‘It was the best night’s sleep I’ve had in ages.’

U. S. saxophonis­t, who played with Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, has been hailed as ‘jazz’s greatest living improviser’. Dissatisfi­ed with his music in 1959, he spent two years playing on a New york bridge in sessions of up to 15 hours. He called his comeback album The Bridge. She said she was not afraid and had been reminded of a line from her Babylon 5 character: ‘We are star stuff.’ ELIA KAZAN (1909-2003). The Istanbulbo­rn U.S. director made A Streetcar Named Desire and East of Eden. After pioneering ‘method acting’, winning three Tony awards and introducin­g Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller to Broadway, he abandoned the stage, declaring: ‘There is no damned theatre any more. I hate the theatre. Movies is where all the action is.’
