Man who lost ‘period tsar’ job may sue over sexism

- By John Paul Breslin

A MAN set to be the country’s first ‘period dignity officer’ before the role was axed may sue for sex discrimination, it emerged yesterday.

Jason Grant’s appointment to the position had sparked a backlash from many who argued that men were not suitable for the role.

Mr Grant was to have earned up to £36,126 to promote access to free sanitary products in schools and colleges, and discuss menopause issues.

The former personal trainer from Dundee has now instructed law firm MML Legal to pursue a case on his behalf under the Equality Act 2010, including a

possible claim of sex discrimination. Ryan Russell, an employment law specialist at the firm, said: ‘Let it be known that my client was removed from his role and did not leave... he was excluded from key discussions and decisions that were made.’

He told The Courier newspaper that Mr Grant had gone from ‘poster boy to fall guy in a matter of weeks’.

The role, based in Tayside and funded by the Scottish government, was axed after ‘threats and abuse’ towards individuals. Tayside’s period dignity working group had selected Mr Grant.

Mr Russell added: ‘There are many legal issues arising not only from the appointment but in the decisions that have been made not to support Jason or stand by their appointment which could impact his health, career and future prospects.’
