PICK OF TODAY’S TV STUCK, 10PM, BBC2
INCREDIBLY, it’s 18 years since Dylan Moran’s cult sitcom Black Books came to end and he hasn’t been seen in another lead comedy role until this witty new series, which he has also written, about a couple at a crossroads in their relationship. There are shades of the Irish comedian’s famously irascible and misanthropic Black Books character, Bernard Black, in Dan, who has recently been made redundant from his job as an advertising jingle writer and is feeling left behind by the world. His younger girlfriend, Carla (The Windsors’ Morgana Robinson), meanwhile, is increasingly busy working as an assistant for a wellness guru, and is expecting more from life than their slightly humdrum existence. The five-part series comes in bitesize 15-minutes episodes, showing in double bills, and sets the tone at the start with the pair doing a relationship quiz in bed — will they make it or break up? Robinson and Moran (pictured) make for a convincing couple who, while stuck in a bit of a rut and unsure of what the future holds, still love one another. It sounds like a fairly standard sitcom setup, but Moran’s way with words and a seam of surrealism give Stuck a distinctive flavour. All five episodes will be available on iPlayer after tonight’s opening double bill.
