IN A dramatic start to the shift, a helicopter is used to deliver urgent care (from paramedic Jemma, pictured) after a crash causes a car to fall from a bridge onto the A1. And the pressure on the ambulance service doesn’t ease off — control receives several 999 calls alerting them to a suspected gas explosion in Sunderland, forcing the team to declare a major incident. We also meet two pensioners who are struggling to care for their respective spouses — it’s heart-breaking to watch as they tell the paramedics about their difficulties.
