EDINBURGH TIMELINE

■ 12.45pm The King and the Queen Consort arrive at Edinburgh Airport and travel to the Palace of Holyroodho­use where Charles III inspects the Guard of Honour.

■ As is traditiona­l when the monarch arrives in Holyrood, the Ceremony of the Keys, pictured, follows.

■ 2.35pm. The procession sets off from the Forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodho­use for St Giles’ Cathedral. It will consist of a hearse, flanked by the Bearer Party of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and a detachment of The King’s Body Guard in Scotland, the Royal Company of Archers.

■ The King and members of the Royal Family follow on foot with the Queen Consort and other senior royals following in cars. On arrival at St Giles’ Cathedral, the procession is received by a Guar of Honour found by the Royal Company of Archers

■ 2.55pm The coffin is carried into the cathedral, where the Duke of Hamilton and a Brandon, as Hereditary Keeper of the Palace of Holyroodho­use, will place the Crown of Scotland, right, on to the coffin.

■ The service is conducted by Reverend Calum MacLeod, Minister of St Giles’ Cathedral. The congregati­on is drawn from all areas of Scottish society.

■ 3pm The King attends a service of prayer and reflection for the life of the Queen at St Giles’ Cathedral, before returning to Holyrood.

■ After the service, the coffin rests at St Giles’ Cathedral for a period 24 hours. Members the public are able o visit to pay their last respects.

■ Continuous vigils are mounted the coffin by the Royal Company of Archers, left.

■ 7.20pm The King and senior royals will ount a vigil, standing guard at the four corners.

■ The Queen’s coffin remains St Giles’ Cathedral until Tuesday when it will be flown to London by the Royal Air Force.
