Guess who’s now the UK’s 4th biggest supermarket?
ALDI has overtaken Morrisons to become Britain’s fourth biggest supermarket.
The German discounter’s sales rose 18.7 per cent over the three months to September, giving it a 9.3 per cent market share and overtaking Morrisons on 9.1 per cent.
Meanwhile, fellow budget chain Lidl increased sales by 20.9 per cent and its market share to 7.1 per cent.
Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said shoppers were ‘voting with their feet by choosing Aldi over full price traditional supermarkets’.
It comes as grocery inflation hit a record high of 12.4 per cent in the past month, up from last month’s record of 11.6 per cent. Data from research firm Kantar shows the average annual grocery bill could surge from £4,610 to £5,181 if consumers do not shop around.
