Zendaya and Lily bring the glamour back to Emmy awards

- By Imogen Horton

IT WAS a muted affair last year, when Covid protocols thwarted the usual pomp and spectacle.

But the Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday saw all the glitz and glamour rush back.

Zendaya and Lily James both showed off their figures in sweeping dresses on the red carpet.

The Greatest Showman actress Zendaya, 26, who won her second Emmy for best actress in a drama, looked chic in a scarlet Valentino gown with a plunging off-the-shoulder neckline.

She won the award for her role as a recovering drug-addict teen in US series Euphoria. She bagged an Emmy for the same role in 2020 and is the youngest actress to have won this category.

British actress Miss James, 33, who was nominated for her role as Pamela Anderson in miniseries Pam And Tommy, wore a shimmering Versace dress to the LA event. But Amanda Seyfried, 36, won the gong for lead actress in a limited series or movie for her role in The Dropout, beating Miss James.

Bodyguard actress Keeley Hawes, 46, wore an elegant spotted tulle Jenny Packham dress with crystal- embellished bows and puff sleeves. She was joined by her husband Matthew Macfadyen, 47, who beat his Succession co-stars to win best supporting actor in a drama series for the first time. Fellow Briton Nicholas

Hoult gave a nod to the 1970s in a pair of black flared trousers.

Succession, which follows the ruthless Logan Roy and his media empire, was the big winner of the night, scooping the coveted outstanding drama series gong for the second time. But on accepting the award, British writer Jesse Armstrong, 51, took a joking swipe at the ascension of King Charles III – only for it to fall horribly flat.

He told the audience: ‘It’s a big week for successions, a new King in the UK, this for us. Evidently a bit more voting involved in our winning than for Prince Charles.’

The crowd was silent as the show’s Scottish lead actor Brian Cox quickly added: ‘Keep it royalist, keep it royalist.’

Armstrong then scrambled to recover, saying: ‘I’m not saying that we’re any more legitimate in our position than he is, we’ll leave that to other people.’
