We’re one nation
THE BBC’s coverage of the death of the Queen has been measured, informative and well judged in tone. Only the endless references to ‘the four nations’ have detracted from this.
The Queen’s principal public role was as head of state of one nation, the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland, whose people are Britons or the British.
When the Scots were asked in a referendum, we chose to remain part of the British nation.
Most people are quite capable of simultaneously holding British and other identities, whether these relate to a constituent part of the UK or to the country or culture of their ancestors.
If, despite this, the BBC is still convinced there are four nations rather than one, perhaps it should be renamed the Four Nations Broadcasting Corporation.
OTTO INGLIS, Crossgates, Fife. THE Queen was not an actress, musician or sportswoman, so did not perform her duties in any expectation of applause. I hope her funeral is accompanied by silence, broken only by the sound of horses’ hooves. N. J. WOOTTON, Wallasey, Wirral.
