CARDIFF sacked manager Steve Morison in the wake of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at HUDDERSFIELD.

Morison, who took over permanently last November, leaves with the Bluebirds 18th in the table. A club statement said: ‘We’d like to thank Steve for his efforts during his time at Cardiff City, stabilising the first team last season and helping to evolve our squad in line with the club’s philosophy this summer.’ Mark Hudson will take over as caretaker manager, assisted by Tom Ramasut, ahead of their next game against Burnley on October 1. SHEFFIELD UNITED enter the international break three points clear at the top after a performance of contrasts in a 2-0 win at PRESTON. The Blades were well below their best in the first half at Deepdale but took a 40th-minute lead through Iliman Ndiaye’s fifth of the season. Paul Heckingbottom’s team were far better after the break and sealed a fourth straight win when in-form Oli McBurnie scored from close range. Heckingbottom said: ‘We were lethargic in the first-half and all of them will be disappointed. But we were strong in the end, it was a strong away performance.’

WEST BROM earned a point in a 1-1 draw at NORWICH but the pressure remains on Steve Bruce with the Baggies 21st in the table. Dara O’Shea put the Baggies ahead but Sam Byram equalised. Bruce felt the ball went in off his arm. ‘I know it’s a hard job but big decisions have cost us and if I don’t win games, I get my head chopped off,’ Bruce said. Jewison Bennette scored a late equaliser as SUNDERLAND drew 2-2 with WATFORD to climb up to fifth. Black Cats coach Tony Mowbray said: ‘Bennette is off to prepare for Costa Rica and the World Cup. He hardly speaks a word of English but comes in with a smile on his face. ‘He’s going to surprise a lot of people this season. He is one hell of a story.’ Tom Ince’s beautiful free-kick returned READING to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at WIGAN. LUTON beat BLACKBURN 2-0 thanks to goals by Carlton Morris and Reece Burke before manager Nathan Jones took aim at the keyboard warriors in the club’s fanbase. ‘I don’t read social media but people sometimes show me stuff and things that people are saying...’ Jones fumed.

MILLWALL ended their recent poor run by beating BLACKPOOL 2-1. SWANSEA earned a much-needed win to climb out of the bottom three as they swept HULL aside 3-0. BIRMINGHAM and played out a goalless draw, as did and
