FAKES, NETFLIX

WHAT happens when two high-school girls discover a way to make unbelievably good fake IDs? That’s the question that drives the plot of this brash and vibrant Canadian drama, with Jennifer Tong as Becca, who’s the outgoing, stylish one, and Emilija Baranac as straight-A student Zoe (pictured far right with Tong), who’s the brains of the operation. Before they know it, the entrepreneurial teens have built up an enormous counterfeit ID empire and are living it up in a ritzy penthouse — but they are also coming to the attention of some shady characters, and their unexpected success tests their friendship to its limits. Over ten half-hour episodes, the enterprising pair take it in turns to give us their subtly different versions of the events that took them from prom dates to prison cells. The result is a smart, funny and knowing crime yarn that owes more to Clueless and Heathers than it does to The Sopranos, and leaves us wondering which of the girls’ stories to believe.
