HANDMADE: BRITAIN’S BEST WOODWORKER, 8PM, CH4
HOSTED by Mel Giedroyc, this show shares its DNA with last night’s Great British Bake Off (which Mel once cohosted), and the main thing they have in common is warmth and good humour — the woodworkers are humble about their mostly self-taught abilities and upbeat in the face of all-out disaster. Tonight, ten excitable new contestants have made their way to the workshop nestled in the ancient woodland of the Glanusk Estate in South Wales, where they’ll have two days to craft a dining table inspired by a country of their choice. The expert judges — London-based woodworker Sophie Sellu and writer, broadcaster and historian Tom Dyckhoff (pictured with Mel) — will be looking for a combination of sturdiness and finesse in their efforts. Meanwhile, there’s also the skills challenge, which will give one of the amateur craftspeople a guaranteed place in the next round and take them one step closer to being crowned Britain’s Best Woodworker; this week, that will be the competitor who most impresses Sophie and Tom with their veneer panelling. There will, though, be one saw loser who won’t be making the cut . . .
