TINY TINKLES, 2.30PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA

-

IT’S a bit of a mystery why tinkly little tunes, played on music boxes, toy pianos or other dinky instruments, can add an extra layer of creepiness to a horror film. Is it because tinkly music is associated with childhood, and the juxtaposition of lullabies and nursery rhymes (many of which have a dark undercurrent themselves) with nasty on-screen events sets our nerves jangling? The musician and comedian Rainer Hersch looks at both the charming and the dark side of tinkly music. He hears from experts such as concert pianist Xenia Pestova, who gives us a history of the use of toy piano in serious music, and music box shop owner Richard Dean.

■ THOMAS STRAKER is the ‘king of butter’ — the chef (pictured) loves the stuff, be it garlic butter, burnt butter, Marmite butter or slap-it-thick-on-hot-fresh-bread butter. He’s forever posting mouthwatering videos about it online; don’t look if you’re on a diet. For this week’s ONE DISH (9.30AM, RADIO 4), Thomas cooks Andi Oliver his favourite meal. Pici cacio e pepe is a simple dish with few ingredients and, as you’ve guessed, it’s full of butter.
