we in New Zealand could watch live: the lone piper, the choral cadences, the sailors pulling the carriage. a greater display of overall dignity and discipline may never be witnessed again.

only when you see such transparen­cy can you grasp what a democratic society means. No one forced any loyalty. No one staged any grief.

Putin, Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping should look and learn. respect always has to be earned.
