East End Eton is world star

-

A STATE sixth form dubbed the ‘Eton of the East End’ is in the running for a $50,000 (£44,000) global prize for its work to boost pupils’ mental health.

The London Academy of Excellence in Newham is in the final three of the World’s Best School contest after it developed a wellbeing strategy teaching healthy habits, behaviour and skills.

LAE got its nickname as many of its pupils go to Oxbridge. A third of its pupils qualify for free school meals, but it is selective and entry is competitive.

Principal Alex Crossman said: ‘We are a school that supports and fosters ambition. What is really key for us is the environment is supportive.’ The T4 Education contest winner will be revealed next month.
