UEFA U-TURN ON PLANS TO EXPAND EUROS IN 2028
UEFA are set to abandon plans to expand the Euros to 32 teams ahead of the 2028 competition, which is on course to be held in the UK. The governing body had planned yet another expansion after increasing the tournament from 16 to 24 teams in 2016.
But Sportsmail has learned that broadcasters across Europe have told UEFA that a qualifying competition in which 32 of the 55 teams entering would reach the finals would have little commercial value due to its predictability. A final decision will be made at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee in November.
The imminent U-turn will be a blow to potential host cities and clubs in the UK, as a 24-team tournament will only require 10 venues.
