Wright’s R2 swansong

-

HE has been in tune with Radio 2’s afternoon listeners for 23 years.

But the music stopped for Steve Wright yesterday as he paid an emotional farewell to the 2pm to 5pm slot. His show has been axed by the BBC in what is believed to be a move to cut the age of the main presenters.

Wright, 68, told listeners: ‘It goes without saying that I love you and we’ve shared a few tears over the past few weeks.’

The DJ, who joined the BBC in 1980 and formerly presented TV’s Top of the Pops, began the show by saying: ‘No tension here, just fun, celebration and thanks to you...I don’t want to be in bits – but I might.’ His final song was Radio Ga Ga by Queen.

The London-born father-of-two will still present the station’s Sunday Love Songs. Former Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, 49, is taking over the afternoon slot.
