READER’S QUESTION

-

Something has been attacking our young bay tree this year. the new leaves looked fresh and healthy last spring but now, about a third of them have either dead or curled edges.

Mr S. Farley, Shropshire the leaf damage is caused by bay suckers, Lauritrioza alacris. these are voracious insects known as psyllids. Leaves are often noticeable by fuzzy white material. When feeding, they cause the bay leaves to distort. But the bugs are not likely to weaken your tree. Remove the damaged foliage and leave them for Ladybirds to feast on.
