Erik draws line under Ronaldo bust-up

- By CHRIS WHEELER

ERIK ten HAG drew a line under his fall-out with Cristiano Ronaldo after confirming the Manchester United star is back in the squad to face Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League tonight. A week on from Ronaldo’s refusal to play as a substitute against Tottenham and his early exit from Old Trafford, the 37-year-old has served his punishment after being left out of Saturday’s draw at Chelsea and made to train on his own.

There’s every chance Ronaldo could go straight back into the starting line-up tonight with Anthony Martial still not available due to a back injury. ‘Yes, Cristiano will be in the squad tomorrow,’ said Ten Hag who was clearly keen to put the issue to bed. ‘I think we said everything and answered all the questions. He was out for one game and is back in the squad as usual. We will not answer any more. It’s done, he’s back, focus on the game. What’s important is that Cristiano is involved in the squad.’

Ten Hag confirmed that Raphael Varane will not be available for United until after the World Cup, followin his hamstring injury. Harry Maguire’s return from injury will help soften the blow after United’s captain resumed training with Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United need a point to be sure of reaching the knockout stage, but are likely to need to win to keep alive their hopes of beating Real Sociedad to first place in Group E to go straight into the last 16.

Meanwhile, the FA have charged United with failing to control their players for the second week in a row. United surrounded referee Stuart Attwell at Chelsea to dispute his decision to award a penalty, having already been charged for staging a similar protest against Craig Pawson when he disallowed a Ronaldo goal against newcastle.
