The Bristol prop missed the tour of Australia after struggling with a back injury. Eddie Jones was unconvinced by his early-season form but he had just started to regain some momentum at his club before joining up with England.

Yet again, the Leicester veteran is Jones’s preferred option at scrum-half despite the competition from fellow Tiger Jack van Poortvliet, who shone Down Under. With Raffi Quirke and other rookies challenging, Youngs needs to re-assert himself.

Bath’s giant wing was chosen to start the series opener in Australia, but struggled and wasn’t seen again. He has all the physical attributes to be a defence-wrecker, but Jones can’t keep picking him based on raw power and hope.
