THE UK is the third most ‘climate ready’ nation in the G7 group – behind only France and Germany.

A report by insurer Aviva tallied how each of the G7 members, as well as Ireland, is tackling and adapting to climate change.

It highlighted the UK’s ‘strong performance’ on cutting emissions and its commitment to be net zero by 2050. But Aviva said the UK should improve its protection of the natural world and increase its support for businesses tackling climate change.

Chief executive Amanda Blanc said it would ‘take leadership from government and business’ to get the UK to the top of the table. Canada, the world’s fourth biggest producer and exporter of oil, was last on the list, only slightly lower than the US.

PRiME Minister Rishi sunak unveiled a £220million package of measures to help the environment at Cop27.

He said the UK was committing £90million to conserving the tropical rainforest in the Congo Basin and £65million to the Nature, People and Climate investment Fund, which supports indigenous and local forest communities.

A further £65.5million will go to the Clean Energy innovation Facility, which funds the acceleration of clean technology in developing countries.

Mr sunak said yesterday: ‘The world came together in Glasgow with one last chance to create a plan that would limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees.

‘The question today is: can we summon the collective will to deliver on those promises? i believe we can.

‘By honouring the pledges we made in Glasgow, we can turn our struggle against climate change into a global mission for new jobs and clean growth.’
